Sunday Sendoff #45: You Can’t Bubble Wrap Life

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

My son fell off a scooter this week and broke his arm.

And yeah—I felt it immediately.

That punch of guilt.

I’m his Dad.

I should’ve said no. I should’ve set better rules. I should’ve protected him.

That’s where your mind goes.

Backwards.

Replaying it. Rewriting it. Trying to fix something that’s already done.

But here’s the truth:

He’s ridden those scooters hundreds of times. The risk was always there. I accepted it.

Because you can’t bubble wrap life.

Kids are going to run. Climb. Fall. Get hurt. That’s part of growing up. That’s part of living.

And if you try to eliminate all risk…you don’t raise a strong kid.

You raise a fragile one.

So yeah—it happened.

It sucks.

But we handled it. We got him taken care of. He’s healing. He’ll make a full recovery.

That’s what really matters.

And it gave me something I didn’t expect:

Perspective.

It reminded me how much I love him. How much I take for granted.

His health. His energy. His presence.

The normal, everyday moments that feel so routine…until something shakes you awake.

I’m not taking that for granted anymore.

Here’s the bigger picture:

You can play it smart and minimize risk…but bad things are still going to happen.

To you. To your family. To the people you care about.

You don’t get to control that.

What you do control is your response.

Are you going to sit in guilt? Beat yourself up? Shut down?

Or are you going to step up?

Accept it. Handle it. Make it right.

Then move forward.

That’s the job. That’s the standard.

Because life doesn’t stop.

And neither should you.

Guiding Principle

It’s less about what happens, and more about how you respond.

Something to Ponder

When things go wrong, how have you handled it in the past? How could you have handled it better? How are you going to handle things in the future?

Sunday Sendoff #44: Cut What Doesn’t Fit

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

Sometimes we try to hold onto things that just aren’t working.

Things that might’ve fit in a past life. Things that worked for a past version of you.

We try to force it. We do mental gymnastics. We rationalize it. We tell ourselves it’ll get better.

But right now?

It’s just weighing you down. Holding you back.

Cut it.

Life’s too short to carry dead weight.

Alignment is everything.

If it doesn’t fit your life, your mission, your direction—

it doesn’t belong.

Over the past couple years, I’ve ended a lot of things.

Things I could’ve held onto. Things I could’ve tried to revive.

But I knew—deep down—it wasn’t right.

I was just dragging it out.

And that costs you.

Time. Energy. Focus.

We want to make things work. We want to fix it. We want to build something solid.

But you can’t build things on a shaky foundation.

And you can’t force something into place that doesn’t belong there.

So don’t.

Cut it.

Guiding Principle

If it doesn’t fit…cut it.

Something to Ponder

What are you holding onto that isn’t working? What are you forcing? What needs a clean cut?

Sunday Sendoff #43: Relentless Persistence

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

I’m reading Shoe Dog right now.

And one thing that hits early?

Relentless persistence.

Keep going.

When you want to quit. When things look bleak. When it feels like it’s not going to work.

Keep going.

I’ll be honest…

In the past, I’ve been a quitter.

I’ve walked away from things too early.

Now, some of those decisions were right.

You should try things. Test. Explore. Find your path.

But not all of them.

Some of them?

I quit because I was being weak. Because it got uncomfortable. Because it got hard.

Don’t be that guy.

Don’t be the man who folds the second things stop being easy.

Yes—cut what isn’t right for you.

But what is right for you? What matters?

What you know—deep down—is part of your mission?

That’s where most men fail.

They quit right before it starts to pay off.

What stood out to me about Phil Knight wasn’t just his success…

It was how many times things went wrong.

Doors slammed. Deals fell through. Money got tight. Pressure stacked.

He had every reason to quit.

And almost did—multiple times.

Imagine if he did.

No Nike. No impact. No legacy.

Just another guy who almost had something.

That’s the difference.

Not talent. Not luck.

Staying in the fight.

So if you’re in it right now—

If it’s hard…

If it’s slow…

If it feels uncertain…

Good.

That’s part of it.

Keep going.

Guiding Principle

When it gets hard…

That’s when it counts.

Keep going.

Something to Ponder

Did you quit something that mattered?

Or are you thinking about quitting right now?

Be honest.

Was it truly the wrong path…

or did it just get hard?

Sunday Sendoff #42: Spend More Time With Your Elders

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

I saw my dad briefly the other day.

Just a quick moment. In passing.

And it hit me…I don’t see him that much.

Not really. Not like I should.

And then another thought came in—quiet, but heavy:

We don’t have that much time left together.

Not in the grand scheme of things.

And that’s true for all of us.

Our parents. Our grandparents.

The older men and women who were here before us.

We move through life like they’re permanent. Like there’s always another weekend. Another holiday. Another chance to sit down, talk, ask questions, listen.

But there isn’t.

Not unlimited, anyway.

Time is undefeated.

And one day you’ll wish you had one more conversation. One more story. One more ordinary moment that didn’t feel important at the time.

So here’s the move:

Spend more time with your elders.

Call them. Visit them. Sit with them longer than you planned.

Ask them about their life. Their struggles. Their wins. Their regrets.

There’s wisdom there you won’t find anywhere else.

And more importantly, there’s connection.

Because being a Builder isn’t just about building your future.

It’s about remembering and honoring where you came from.

It’s about recognizing that you’re part of a line—and one day, you’ll be the elder.

And when that day comes, you’ll hope the younger generation will make time for you.

So don’t wait.

Make the call. Make the visit.

Sit a little longer.

Because one day…you won’t be able to.

Guiding Principle

Catch up today. Tomorrow may be too late.

Something to Ponder

Who have you been neglecting? Maybe it’s time to build that relationship…before it’s too late.

Sunday Sendoff #41: Ups and Downs

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

I played a little blackjack the other night.

Not for real money—just for fun.

But I couldn’t stop watching my chips.

Sometimes I was up.

Sometimes I was down.

Stacks high…then suddenly gone.

And it hit me:

This is life.

Sometimes you’re riding high.

Everything’s clicking. Money’s good. Body’s strong. Energy’s up.

Other times?

You’re scraping.

Low energy. Setbacks. Doubt creeping in.

Chips disappearing faster than you can stack them back up.

And in both moments—you’re faced with a choice.

When you’re up…

Do you stay disciplined?

Or get reckless and lose it all chasing more?

When you’re down…

Do you fold?

Or stay in the game and fight your way back?

Because here’s the truth, brother:

Nobody stays up forever.

And nobody stays down forever either.

The only thing that matters…

Is that you keep playing.

Smart when you’re winning.

Steady when you’re losing.

And relentless through both.

Because the man who stays at the table—

The man who doesn’t panic…

doesn’t quit…

doesn’t go on tilt…

That’s the man who builds something real.

Ups and downs are part of the game.

But quitting?

That’s the only guaranteed loss.

Stay in it.

Builder Principle

You’re going to win. You’re going to lose. How you handle both is everything.

Something to Ponder

What kind of streak are you on right now? Are you up? How can you keep it that way? If you’re down, what are you going to do to start winning?

Sunday Sendoff #40: The Grass Isn’t Always Greener…But Sometimes It Is

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

You’ve heard the phrase:

“The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.”

It’s true…

Sometimes.

A lot of life comes down to discernment.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently.

What’s working for me? What’s not? What should stay? What needs to go?

The hard part is knowing when to throttle down and keep pushing…

…and when it’s time to walk away and try something new.

Sometimes the grass is greener on the side you’re standing on.

Sometimes it’s greener on the other side.

And sometimes…

there’s a patch of grass somewhere you’re not even looking that’s the greenest of all.

It’s your call. You’re the CEO of your own life.

And here’s the truth:

Deep down—really deep down—you already know what the right call is.

You might be held back by fear. You might be held back by comfort. You might be held back by circumstances.

But you can feel it.

And usually…

your first reaction is the truest.

It behooves you to listen.

Because you’re the one who has to live with the consequences. You’re the one who has to live that life.

No one else does.

Builder Principle

Make the call. Then own it.

Something to Ponder

Is there something you’ve been sitting on the fence about? Maybe it’s time to choose.

Sunday Sendoff #39: Progress Usually Isn’t a Straight Line Up

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

We like to think of progress as a straight line.

Straight up.

Always winning. Always moving forward. Always making gains.

But that’s usually not the case.

In fact, that’s almost never the case.

There will be setbacks. There will be sidesteps. There will be detours. There will be times you need to stop.

Indeed, progress usually looks more like the drawing of a two-year-old. Lines going everywhere. Up. Down. Sideways. Loops.

And that’s fine.

As long as you have one thing:

An upward trend.

When you zoom out, the bird’s-eye view should show progress.

Small setbacks don’t matter. Lateral movements don’t matter. Detours don’t matter. Stopping briefly doesn’t matter.

As long as the trendline keeps moving upward.

Just keep going.

Builder Principle

Don’t worry about the small stuff. Just keep the trendline moving up.

Something to Ponder

Are you judging your progress too closely? Zoom out. Look at the last year. The last five years. Is the overall direction upward? If it is…you’re doing better than you think.

Sunday Sendoff #38: The High Cost of Redlining

Brickwall's Sunday Sendoff

I was burning the candle at both ends. Grinding myself into dust. Pulverizing myself into nothing.

My health suffered (including mental health). My ability to parent suffered. My relationship suffered.

It wasn’t until a hard reset—with some serious rest—that I was able to see how much I had been redlining.

We naturally want to build. To grind. To hustle.

It’s hard to keep us still.

Every waking moment feels like it needs to be filled with something productive.

But at a certain point, your body and mind will give out on you.

You’re not a machine.

You need to just be—dare I say—lazy once in a while.

Lay on the couch and do nothing. Lay in bed for the whole morning. Be a slacker for half the day.

And when you come back?

You’ll be as voracious as ever to get back to it.

Rest isn’t weakness.

It’s strength. It’s strategy. It’s necessary.

Guiding Principle

Rest…or feel the repercussions.

Something to Ponder

Why not reset and schedule some time to do absolutely nothing? Set up some couch time. Or chill in bed for the whole morning. Or at the very least, take an hour and do nothing productive.
